Nobody told these people to do this, nobody has made them. They are doing so as a personal decision to live the world they want to create. To take charge of their lives.
This is the story of a group of people in England and Wales who have decided to opt out of large scale, factory farming. Their emphasis is on small-scale growing for local markets. The aim, to be physically – and mentally – regenerative of self, earth, and community.
The ecological and well-being crises that we face are nestled within crises of truth, democracy, and political leadership. Their story is a story of individuals not being defeated, one of people deciding for themslves to act in the interests of personal and global well-being.
Counter perhaps to our intuition, the yield from these small, local operations is capable of generating enough food to feed us all. Extrapolate the yields across the available agricultural land in the UK and the calculations indicate more than enough capacity to healthily feed the 70 million plus of us. The need for factory farming is, it seems, yet another myth. Moreover, in such a shift of emphasis we would create around six million small entrepreneurial farming businesses.
